The cartes de visite and cabinet cards collection is an assembled collection, originating from various 19th century photographic studios such as those of Matthew Brady and the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company. Dr. Lloyd Ostendorf, the internationally known "Lincoln Artist," of Dayton, Ohio, known around the world as the foremost authority on Lincoln images, generously identified the majority of the subjects in the photographs, through his assistance to the museum staff. Scope and Contents
Although a Major General during the American Civil War the collection contains few materials from Howard's service in the conflict. A rather large portion of the collection is devoted to correspondence between Harry Stinson Howard, son of O. O. Howard and LMU President President Robert L. Kincaid.

Introduction and Biographical Information
The Oliver Otis Howard Papers were given to Lincoln Memorial University by
two persons: Captain Harry S. Howard, the son, contributed chiefly the personal papers
and memorabilia of General Howard, while Justin G. Turner donated various
correspondence written during Howard's military service years and Freedmen's Bureau
period. Additional material: consisting of several rare pamphlets, were also donated by
