Biographical / Historical

John Hale Larry (1843-1919) was a minister, educator, and tradesman (print) who was Lincoln Memorial University's 2nd president (1899-1904).

He originialy lived in Providence, RI, but soon moved to TN to work as LMU's first live-in president.

He "instituted a semi-military regime at Grant-Lee Hall"(46) and while his early students thought of him favorably that would soon changed. He would often "antagonized people"(59), and had hid scandals involving his son. His collegues would soon find him difficult.

In 1904, Larry would be replaced by William Stooksbury. Lasting impressions were just as sour, when he took several volumes of an encyclopedia he ordered and paid for with University funds. (61)

He would move to Virginia "to serve as founder and president of the unsucessful Highland Techical Institution", then later became a pastor at Edgewood Congregational Church in Providence before retiring in 1917. He passed in 1919.
