Eugene P. Fairchild Papers
Abstract
Eugune P. Fairchild (1854-1935) was financial secretary of Lincoln Memorial University, holding that post until about 1920. He was a director of the university until 1930, when he became an honorary director. This collection includes correspndences to and from Fairchild.

Eugune Fairchild (1854-1935) was the "former financial secretary of Lincoln Memorial University, Cumberland Gap, Tenn., and brother-in-law of the late Chancellor Elmer Ellsworth Brown of New York University."
"In 1897, he became financial secretary of Lincoln Memorial University, holding that post until about 1920. He was a director of the university until 1930, when he became an honorary director. He was instrumental in raising about $500,000 for the college and university he served as financial officer, mostly for the latter."

Fairchild managed to garner thousands of pledges and lesser donors, earning a percentage of the donation as his fee. He respected and valued Howard. (87-88)

Eugene P. Fairchild was the son of Berea president Edward Henry Fairchild. Edward was a member of the American Missionary Association (AMA). He would serve as Berea Colleges' first president from 1869 to his teath in 1889. He was an ardent supporter of multiracial education and drew his support from the AMA.
Upon his father's death in 1889, Eugene Fairchild was elevated to the role of financial officer at Berea College.
Euguene used his position to prose his own canidate, William Frost, as president of the university. Frost saw the university maintain stable footing as an institution. Fairchild clashed with his decisions, leading him to leave Berea.
President Frost saw Fairchild as a threat to Berea, beliving that the northern-backed LMU would disrupt his cause to appealing racial tension in the reigon. He accused Fairchild of alienating donors.
