Lincoln and Washington Scrapbooks
Scope and Contents
The scrapbooks arrived at the museum removed from their binders, and as such were disorganized. Moreover, they came in at irregular intervals which accounts for the folio numbering not being in chronological order. The scrapbooks contain any newspaper and magazine articles, newspaper photographs, drawings and advertisements which contain a mention of either Lincoln or Washington. The 1930’s articles also contain significant news of air disasters, such as the Hindenburg and USS Squalus, and large fires or explosions in Chicago. There are numerous articles concerning the United States becoming involved in the European war, but little concerning the war itself, including a virtual absence of article concerning Pearl Harbor.
While the scrapbook entries are generally in chronological order, often anachronistic material appears in them. For example, there are 1935 and 1936 additions to pastings that predominantly date to 1948-1949 (Folio 114) and a 1940 magazine article on Folio 118v. Likewise, an article from February 1926 (Folio 394v) and a photograph, Glorious Lincoln Day (February 12, 1930), appears in a scrapbook for 1932.

A series of scrapbooks from 1928 through 1948 containing newspaper and magazine articles and advertisements primarily dealing with Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Most of the articles come from Chicago and Detroit newspapers. The scrapbooks also contain news of air disasters and major events in Chicago.
