George B. Cockrell Collection

Abstract

George Burton Cockrell, son of William A. Cockrell and Sarah Spratt, was born on December 12, 1836 in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, and died in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee on September16, 1917. He was a Major in the Confederate Army.

Cockrell lived for a number of years at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, following the industrial development of 1890.

John Lorimer Worden Papers

Scope and Contents The papers of John Lorimer Worden (1818-1897) span the years 1835-1891, with the bulk of the material covering the years 1861 to 1868.The collection consists of correspondence and official papers relating to Rear Admiral John Lorimer Worden's service in the U.S. Navy, a personal scrapbook, and various handwritten manuscripts authored by Worden. These papers have great historical value because of the epic naval engagement between the U.S.S. "Monitor" and the C.S.S. "Virginia"...

Lincoln and Washington Scrapbooks

Abstract

A series of scrapbooks from 1928 through 1948 containing newspaper and magazine articles and advertisements primarily dealing with Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Most of the articles come from Chicago and Detroit newspapers. The scrapbooks also contain news of air disasters and major events in Chicago. However, there is little information concerning foreign affairs, the Spanish Civil War or World War II.
