Scope and Contents

These photographs, diplomas, and medical instruments displayed within an antique display case provide insight into Marion Lockwood “M. L.” Jenkins' professional life as a doctor. They include photographs with academic, professional, and personal content, diplomas granted to M. L. Jenkins upon his graduation as a student of the Lincoln Memorial University Medical Department in 1912, and medical instruments of various types used during his years as a doctor, between the years of 1912 to 1969, now displayed in an antique medical cabinet.

Biographical Note

Marion Lockwood Jenkins was born on August 14, 1884, to Ransom Lafayette and Phoebe C. (Eastridge) Jenkins in Mountain City, Tennessee. Growing up, Marion attended the Appalachian High School and later, taught at public schools, studied law, and worked for the Internal Revenue Service.

By 1908, Marion Lockwood Jenkins decided to pursue the study of medicine of Lincoln Memorial University’s Medical Department in Knoxville, Tennessee. During his time at LMU Medical Department, Marion was known as “Jenk” and was the Treasurer of the Athletic Association, President of the Medical Society, and a member of the Surgical Society as well as the Union County Club by the time of his graduation. In 1912, Marion Lockwood Jenkins graduated with a Doctor of Medicine from the Lincoln Memorial University Medical Department in Knoxville, Tennessee.

After his graduation, Dr. M. L. Jenkins went on to practice medicine in the areas of Maynardville and then in 1918, in the areas of Harbison’s Crossroads of Knox County, Tennessee, until his retirement in 1969.

At the time of his passing on December 22, 1973, Dr. Jenkins left behind three sons, Aubrey, Erby, and Zemp Jenkins; two stepdaughters; several grandchildren; and two brothers, Clinton and Paris Jenkins.

The antique white metal glass-paned medical display cabinet, with an assortment of medical instruments displayed within, was separated from the items placed within Oversized Drawer B.3. It is now on display within the archival research room of the University Archives & Special Collections.
